According to History.com, it was at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day. However, it wasn't until much later that people decided to celebrate the holiday through various acts of love.

During the middle ages, it was commonly believed that February 14 was the beginning of the mating season for birds, so it only seemed right that the day should be one of romance.

Now, Valentine's Day has become one of the most popular holidays around with people celebrating it all across the world. It's become a tradition to give flowers and candy to your special someone on the holiday.

According to the British Florist Association, it's estimated that 250 million stems of flowers are sold globally on Valentine's Day.
