Donald Trump has won North Carolina, according to the Associated Press' projection, the first swing state to be called in a historically close election.

The race in the other six battleground states - Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin - appears too close to call. 

Earlier both candidates notched up early but expected wins in several states, with Trump clinching places like Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Kamala Harris has so far captured the largest prize of California, along with Rhode Island, Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont and the US capital Washington, DC, among other states.
