Sheffield United 22 West Ham Lastgasp penalty drama as Oli
Sheffield United huffed, puffed and snatched a 2-2 draw with West Ham as Oli McBurnie struck from the penalty spot deep into injury time.

Sheffield United claimed a dramatic late point against West Ham after a wild injury time period at Bramall Lane.

Rhian Brewster and Vladimir Coufal were both shown a red card after normal time had elapsed, before an Oliver McBurnie penalty in the 13th minute of injury time salvaged a draw.

In a game where they were mostly outplayed, West Ham thought they had won the match with 11 minutes to go. Good work from Danny Ings earned West Ham a penalty, which was dispatched emphatically by James Ward-Prowse.

Prior to that Sheffield United had missed a gilt-edge chance when loan signing Ben Brereton Diaz dragged a shot wide when clean through. It was Brereton Diaz that had scored the hosts' first equaliser of the game, when his half-volley late in the first half cancelled out an opener from Maxwel Cornet.

The point does not affect either teams place in the league table, as West Ham remain sixth and Sheffield United are still rooted to the foot of the table.

Talking point - Too much caution from West Ham?

There will be a lot for Davis Moyes to rue after this visit to South Yorkshire. He was furious that a late, late penalty was not awarded for a foul on Jarrod Bowen, but that’s not what cost his team three points today.

After crafting the lead with time running out, poor decision making from West Ham saw some late chances go to waste and they carelessly gave the ball away to concede a free kick deep in injury time, which saw Coufal sent off. That made it ten versus ten, and it was soon level on the scoreboard.

Game management is crucial in the Premier League. West Ham had already made a defensive change prior to going 2-1 ahead, and by inviting the hosts on to them they paid the price in the final minutes of the game. They remain sixth in the table, but to go any higher they need to put games like this to bed when they’re in front.

Player of the match – James McAtee (Sheffield United)

Most of the hosts best work today came from McAtee, who slipped into the hole between West Ham’s midfield and defence and was a constant menace. His wicked cross into the box won the penalty that earned his team a deserved late point.

Match highlights

28’ GOAL! Sheff Utd 0-1 West Ham (Cornet): Coufal squares a pass to Ings, who is just inside the area. Ings turns and shoots, only to see it blocked by Souza. The ball bounces away to the back post where Cornet, completely unmarked, cracks in a low volley from close range.

44’ GOAL! Sheff Utd 1-1 West Ham (Diaz): The hosts are level, and it's debut goal for Brereton Diaz! McAtee lofts a ball to the edge of the area; Trusty heads it over to the back post, where Osula is free and plants a header at goal from close range. Areola saves it, but Brereton Diaz wins the loose ball and cracks a half volley into the net!

58' WHAT A CHANCE! McAtee picks the ball up in his own half and splits the West Ham defence with a gorgeous pass to put Brereton Diaz clean through. Brereton Diaz runs it through to the right of the area, but drags his shot wide of the far post! He was onside, and that was a huge opportunity.

79' GOAL! Sheff Utd 1-2 West Ham (Ward-Prowse): It's Ward-Prowse to take, and he buries it down the middle as Fodderingham gambles big to his right. Just like that, West Ham lead!

90+3' RED CARD! Sure enough, Salisbury takes a look and there's only one decision to make, Brewster is off. Coufal also gets booked, but I have no idea what for and Coufal looks bemused as well.

90+7' ANOTHER RED CARD! Coufal brings down McAtee, and two yellows equals red. It's also one last chance for Sheffield United to lob the ball into the box...

90+13' GOAL! Sheff Utd 2-2 West Ham (McBurnie): McBurnie takes it, and drives it low to the left and into the net. Bramall Lane, as you might well imagine, erupts!
