Saudi Pro League embarrassment as World Cup icon and exMan
Saudi Arabia's embarrassing attendance records have continued as just 379 turned up to Al Majma'ah Sports City on Tuesday evening to watch the Saudi Pro League clash between Al Feiha and Al Wehda

The Saudi Pro League has suffered its latest embarrassment as just 379 fans turned up for Al Feiha's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Al Wehda.

Footballers flocked to the Middle East over the summer as they followed in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo - who made the switch last winter. However, the influx of talent hasn't quite transitioned into large attendances.

Less than 400 fans were at Al Majma'ah Sports City's stadium as Al Feiha and Al Wehda clashed. Al Wehda boast their own superstars with World Cup legend Oscar Duarte, ex-Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo and Aussie cult hero Craig Goodwin all making an appearance.

Although born in Nicaragua, Duarte represents Costa Rica on the international stage - and he was part of the team that shocked the world as they made their way to the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup.

Duarte, who plays as a centre-back, opened the scoring on Tuesday, but Al Wehda were pegged back by Fashion Sakala. However, they wouldn't be level for long as just three minutes later Anselmo netted the winner.

Tuesday marked Al Feiha's lowest home attendance of the season, but they have played in two lower attended games away from home. In February, 355 saw them beat Al Hazem 3-1, while just 281 fans saw their 3-1 win on the road against Al Riyadh back in September.

Saudi has invested billions into boxing, football, tennis, F1 and golf to raise their status in the sporting world.

In a previous interview with the BBC, Saudi Arabian sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal brushed off the low attendances by saying they are still early in the process. "It's building blocks… I'm sure that next year we'll have more attendance," he said.

"Like anywhere in the world there's some matches that attract much more audience than others, but all of our big matches have attracted record numbers so far… we're broadcasting to 147 countries around the world.

"When we planned to develop the league we never thought that we would do it with such pace, but to see that is actually refreshing and it actually showcases the importance of this. Our focus is to develop our league to attract the best in the world."
