KUCHING (Jan 2): Sarawakians can now determine their eligibility for the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance Contribution (SKAS) programme using an online checking system which began yesterday.

The eligibility checking tool is available at http://sarawak.gov.my/skas.

Users must first register for their Sarawak ID and provide a valid identification number.

Recipients also need to download and update their SPay Global e-wallet on their mobile devices, as the platform will be used for disbursing the payments.

A detailed infographic explaining the programme’s criteria and how to check eligibility is available.

Part of the Sarawak Budget 2025, the SKAS programme involves an allocation of RM450 million to benefit over 850,000 low-income recipients statewide.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative aimed to alleviate the financial burdens of low-income earners most affected by the rising cost of living.

“This initiative provided financial assistance ranging from RM250 to RM800 annually. Eligible recipients were Sarawakians residing in Sarawak,” he said when tabling the Supply (2025) Bill, 2024 during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting in November last year.

Abang Johari explained that households with incomes of RM5,000 and below would receive RM800, while single individuals earning RM2,500 and below would be given RM250.

He said senior citizens without partners and children with incomes of RM5,000 and below will receive RM400.

The Premier explained this assistance is to help them purchase basic food items such as rice, flour, and cooking oil.

“With this assistance, I may say, everyone will have food on their table. Notwithstanding this, most of the SKAS recipients will also be receiving financial contribution given by the federal government under the Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR),” he said.
