Hungary vs Portugal LIVE: Euro 2020 team news, line-ups and latest build-up today
Euro 2020: Daily briefing
Hungary take on Portugal in the opening game of Group F at Euro 2020 today.
Portugal are back to defend their crown having triumphed over France back in 2016. Blessed with some of the most naturally-gifted players in the world they are one of the favourites to win the tournament again this time around.
They boast a host of winning pedigree with Manchester City title-winners Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva, Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes and European football’s all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo all in their ranks. They won’t have it all their own way, however, with World Cup winners France and three-time champions Germany also involved.
Hungary round out the undoubted group of death and will have their work cut out to get a result or two against some of the tournament big boys. They’ll have the best home advantage of the competition to try and do it, though, with the Puskas Arena set to hold a 61,000-capacity crowd for their games.

Can Cristiano Ronaldo make history this evening? One goal would take him clear of joint-top scorer Michel Platini as the most prolific marksman ever to play in the European Championships.

We are still one hour from kick-off and look at the scenes already inside the Puskas Arena. A reminder that we are expecting a capacity crowd of 61,000 in attendance for Hungary’s home match against Portugal.
It promises to be a startling atmosphere in Budapest. Get ready, this one is going to be a belter (will probably end goalless now).

Hungary line up in a 3-5-2 formation and will be largely relying on Ádám Szalai and Roland Sallai to provide them with an attacking outlet.
The injury to Dominik Szoboszlai at the beginning of the month will hamper Hungary in the middle of the park. Instead they will pack the midfield with a trio consisting of Nagy, Schafer and Kleinheisler.
Orban, Botka and A. Szalai make up the three at the back but they will have their hands full up against Ronaldo, Silva and Jota.

So no place for Joao Felix in the starting line-up for Portugal this evening. But the devastating quarter of Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva are all involved from the start in an attacking line-up put out by Fernando Santos.
Nelson Semedo and Raphael Guerreiro come in as full-backs after Joao Cancelo’s positive coronavirus test ruled him out.
And the ever reliable Pepe partners Manchester City centre-half Ruben Dias in the heart of the Portuguese defence.

Team news is just around the corner. Will be interesting to see how Fernando Santos attempts to fit all of his attacking options into one team.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota. Who would you start and why?

Portugal fans reminding us that they are not only the defending European champions but also the reigning Nations League winners.

All seven times Portugal have qualified for the European Championships they have progressed beyond the group stage.
Two quarter-finals, three semi-finals, 2004 runners-up and 2016 champions. A very impressive resume in European competition.
The last time they were eliminated from a major tournament in the group stage was at the 2002 World Cup.
You imagine that will not be a problem here given three teams could progress through to the last 16. But anything but a win tonight would raise serious questions.

A picture speaks a thousand words. More than 90 minutes out from kick-off and these are the scenes in Budapest.
Portugal will receive a hostile welcome to the Puskas Arena tonight. Could it prove decisive on the pitch?
