NVIDIA introduced Project DIGITS during CES 2025, a US$3,000 (~RM13,500) desktop computer powered by its cutting-edge “Blackwell” AI chip and featuring the new CPU created in collaboration with MediaTek. According to CEO Jensen Huang, MediaTek will be able to market the desktop central processor chip co-designed by the two companies, and also hinted at undisclosed plans for it.

While Project DIGITS primarily targets AI developers, it represents NVIDIA’s latest push to redefine desktop computing with energy-efficient and versatile hardware. Responding to questions during an investor presentation, Huang explained that NVIDIA partnered with MediaTek to develop a CPU that can serve both companies’ interests.

“Now they could provide that to us, and they could keep that for themselves and serve the market,” he said. “And so it was a great win-win.”

A prior report by Reuters revealed NVIDIA’s efforts to challenge market leaders Intel, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Qualcomm in the personal computer sector. Although Project DIGITS is not yet intended for mass-market adoption, its Linux-based operating system highlights the company’s focus on AI developers.

Additionally, Huang outlined a strategy to bridge the gap between Linux and Windows by leveraging Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux, making this integration seamless for end users. He also promises that this will become a mainstream product, adding that NVIDIA will support the initiative with robust software resources to ensure compatibility and quality.

While specific details of NVIDIA’s future plans for its desktop CPU offerings remain under wraps, Huang hinted at broader ambitions. “What else can I do with it? I’m gonna have to wait to tell you that,” he remarked.
