GeForce RTX 2080 with twice the memory

Modders from Brazil deliver another mod. The Paulo Gomes team has put their efforts to make RTX 2080 a little big more capable in modern games.

This time, one of their clients approached the team with a request to upgrade the memory capacity of RTX 2080 from 8GB to a larger size, aiming for a doubling of capacity. The client even supplied the necessary memory, making the task less challenging for the skilled team.

Since GPU modding has become somewhat a competition, the first step was to check whether such a modification had been attempted before. Despite numerous queries, they couldn’t find any results or information about previous attempts.

As a reminder, the RTX 2080 (non-SUPER) game out in 2018 with Turing TU104-400 GPU, which was the full spec variant. The card ships with 2944 CUDA cores, and it was equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit memory bus.

The modification process itself is fairly straightforward. It involves the removal of the old memory and the soldering of the new memory into place. Additionally, there’s a need to adjust the jumpers (as shown above) to deceive the GPU into recognizing the new memory type.

One everything is done correctly, the software like GPU-Z should now show the new VRAM capacity, which in this case is 16384 MB. As shown, the card works perfectly with the standard WHQL drivers with no software modifications necessary. This is important, as it ensures that the customer will have no issues using the card as it was before.

As explained to us, the 16GB mod did not yield in much better gaming performance. The findings are based on a single title, in this case the Resident Evil 4, which is known for high memory requirements. There was visible improvement for 1% low framerate, but overall, it wasn’t a substantial change for average framerate.
