Newtopia Episodes 1 and 2 plot
Newtopia is Prime Video's latest K-drama that brings back fan favourite Jisoo back in the drama world after her stint in Snowdrop. This time BLACKPINK's Jisoo teamed up with Park Jeong-min for the latest zombie thriller.
Newtopia's Episodes 1 and 2 introduced us to the main leads Lee Jae-yoon and Kang Young-jo. While Jae-yoon is struggling in his military enlistment, his girlfriend Young-joo faces the dilemma of either waiting for his return or to break up with him. Amid the young couple's heartbreak, we witness a zombie outbreak that takes a toll on the civilians as well as the military squads.
Newtopia Episodes 1 and 2 review
Jisoo's zombie thriller Newtopia is packed with unexpected thrills and comedy of errors. The unique mix of humour, horror and romance is what keeps you hooked.
The first episode starts at a slow pace and you might have to be a bit patient for it to catch the beat. But towards the end of Episode 1, it picks up pace and feels fascinating to witness a the most chaotic zombie apocalypse.
The performances of both the lead actors, Jisoo and Park Jeong-min are impressive as they deliver the dialogues perfectly in sync with their characters.
Apart from grotesque zombie fight sequences and gory bloody scenes, you also get to experience some absurd humour that is ingrained in the dialogues. The nuanced characters like the eccentric soldiers and their less crazy superiors add up as the plus points for this K-drama. The ensemble cast also features Hong Seo-hee, Tang Jun-sang, Lee Hak-joo and Kim Jun-han in pivotal roles. The episode ended on a cliffhanger note with soldier Lee Jae-yoon stuck in a place full of the undeads.
Although the quirky leads are fun to watch, Newtopia lacks a consistent pace and depth. It feels like anything is happening at the moment and some scenes get too dull, making you want to skip parts. However, since it is just the initial episodes, there is a lot of potential for Newtopia in the next episodes to come up with a more solid backstory. Fans were also left craving for some romance between our two wacky protagonists.
Newtopia Episodes 1 and 2 verdict
Newtopia's initial episodes were quite fascinating. Although there is a lot of chaos and bloody violence going on, Jisoo's charismatic acting and Park Jeon-min's eccentric tactics makes this one a light-hearted watch.
(On February 7, the first two episodes were released. Now, fans will have to wait every Friday to watch the new episodes.)
