MU honors students, faculty, staff at remembrance ceremony

MU honors students faculty staff at remembrance ceremony
The University of Missouri flew flags at half-staff, and 19 bells tolled to remember members of the university community who have died this academic year.

Nineteen bells tolled at the University of Missouri campus Friday afternoon to honor students, faculty and staff who have died in the last year.

Jesse Hall filled with family and friends for the MU Remembers ceremony in honor of those who the university community has lost.

Matthew Martens, the interim provost for the university, said that through this event, MU hopes it's able to support those who are affected by losses this academic year.

"Nothing takes away from those who we've lost, but it's another way to offer support to show that the MU community really is a family," Martens said.

Riley Strain was one of the people remembered at the ceremony. Strain went missing on a fraternity trip in Nashville, and his body was found two weeks ago.

The remembrance ceremony also included a book dedication that will be in Ellis Library and yellow roses donated by the Mizzou Botanic Garden.

MU flags flew at half-staff for the ceremony. The ceremony is a decades-long tradition for the university.
