Google Tensor shipments slip slightly in Q4 2023

Google Pixel is coming off of its best-selling year to date, but according to one report, Google shipped fewer Tensor chips in Q4 2023.

New data from Canalys breaks down smartphone chip shipments through Q4 2023. This includes MediaTek, which once again held first place while also seeing a tremendous 21% year-over-year growth with 117 million shipments. MediaTek’s biggest partner was Samsung, making up 22% of the overall chip shipments.

That’s compared to Apple, which saw 78 million for 7% growth, and Qualcomm at 69 million for mere 1% growth. Samsung, meanwhile, saw its volume nearly cut in half down to 13 million. Huawei’s HiSilicon chips, though, saw massive growth from near-zero to 7 million.

Google Tensor sits at the back of the back, which is no surprise given the chips are only used in Google’s moderately successful Pixel lineup. Google apparently shipped about 3 million Tensor chips in Q4 2023, down 4% from the prior year. Despite this, Google apparently shipped 10 million total Pixel devices in 2023, so this implies that Google’s shipments weren’t centered around Q4 as is often the case.

As far as revenue goes, though, Google saw a 22% jump to roughly two billion in revenue (currency not defined). That’s over 1/3 of Samsung’s revenue, an impressive figure for Google to have reached already.
