KLM B737800 Suffers Runway Excursion in Oslo Amid Hydraulic
A KLM B737-800 suffered a runway excursion after diverting to Oslo Torp Sandefjord Airport with hydraulic problems on 28 December.

A KLM Boeing 737-800 conducting a flight from Oslo, Norway to Amsterdam suffered a runway excursion after diverting with hydraulic problems on 28 December 2024.

KLM flight KL1204, operated by a Boeing 737-800 had conducted a departure from runway 19L Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL). The aircraft was performing a scheduled service bound for Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS).

During the initial climb after departure, flight crew reported experiencing hydraulic problems. As a result the climb procedure was terminated and a diversion to Oslo Torp Sandefjord Airport (TRF) was carried out.

On arrival at the diversion airport, the aircraft conducted an approach to runway 18. During the subsequent landing roll, the aircraft veered to the right and suffered a runway excursion.

The aircraft was brought to a stop with both the nose and right main landing gear off the active runway. There were no injuries reported amongst the 176 passengers and six crew as a result of the landing incident.

A subsequent statement by the airline confirmed the details of the diversion and runway excursion.

“During takeoff of flight KL1204 from Oslo with destination Amsterdam this evening (28-12) a loud noise was heard. It was decided to divert to the airport of Sandefjord.”

“After landing, the Boeing 737 veered off the runway into the grass at low speed. All 176 passengers and 6 crew members are unharmed and are being taken care of. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated.”

Flight Details

Flight data shows that flight KL1204 had made a delayed departure from Oslo Gardermoen Airport. Actual time of departure was logged as 1800 local time on 28 December. Schedule time of departure for the service was listed as 1700 local time.

Following takeoff, flight crew terminated the climb procedure at 5000 feet. The aircraft was then repositioned the diversion airport Oslo Torp Sandefjord Airport. The landing was made just under one hour after the flight’s initial departure from Oslo Gardermoen.

The aircraft conducting the KL1204 service to Amsterdam was a Boeing 737-800, registered PH-BXM. This is a 24.2 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in November 2000.
