Inter Milan’s opening goal against Atalanta in the Supercoppa Italiana yesterday was at the centre of some controversy.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that there was no foul – but that the corner should never have been given.

Inter beat Atalanta in the Supercoppa semifinal yesterday. They won by a 2-0 scoreline, with both goals coming from Denzel Dumfries.

The all-important opener came in the form of a rather improbable bicycle kick from the Dutchman.

It was certainly an impressive acrobatic effort by Dumfries.

However, after the match Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini raged that the goal never should have counted.

Mixed Refereeing On Inter Milan Opener Vs Atalanta In Supercoppa

Firstly, the Atalanta coach felt that there had been a foul by Dumfries on Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini right before the Dutchman scored.

That was what the Atalanta players were appealing for on the pitch.

However, the Gazzetta argue, the contact between the two players was hardly enough for a foul.

On the other hand, the newspaper point out, the last touch on the ball before the corner that led to Inter’s opener came off of Nerazzurri defender Yann Bisseck rather than Atalanta’s Isak Hien.

Therefore, the Gazzetta note, Gasperini had a valid complaint that it never should have been a corner.

Meanwhile, Dumfries had also appealed for a penalty in the first half. The 28-year-old felt that he had been brought down by Atalanta wingback Matteo Reggeri.

However, the Gazzetta notes, Ruggeri got a touch on the ball with his last-ditch tackle.

Moreover, the newspaper argues, it was if anything Dumfries whose leg made contact with Ruggeri.
