England comes into this session after a good last session. Bashir bowled throughout the session courtesy of which India has one new batter at crease - Sarfaraz Khan. 

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal made inroads in the first half of the afternoon session before Shoaib Bashir produced three quick wickets for England. The visitors are back in control of the contest. Jaiswal, unbeaten on 54, holds the key to a big score for India. Sarfaraz Khan would want to accompany his Mumbai teammate for as long as possible. There’s cloud cover and the floodlights are in effect, bringing the duo of James Anderson and Ollie Robinson in play in the final period of play.

Hartley ends the session with a maiden over against Sarfaraz.

Jaiswal with yet another drive down the ground against Bashir to add one run to his tally. WICKET! Jadeja falls, Bashir has his third. Jadeja defends at a delivery but does not quite get his front foot forward. The ball takes on inside edge, bounces up off the pad and goes to the short leg fielder.

Sarfaraz Khan off the mark off the first delivery with a punch through cover. 

Hartley continues. England goes up for a review, appealing a leg before for Jadeja. This one is on the leg stump and stays low. Jadeja’s attempting glance misses the ball and takes the pad but is going way down leg. England loses its review. Four leg byes for India. SIX! Jadeja laps up this over-pitched delivery and packs it over long on. SIX AGAIN! A slog sweep over deep mid wicket. Jadeja in attack mode.

Bashir has Patidar LBW! He goes for a review. Pretty similar delivery to the one which got Gill, pitches on off and turns in sharply. Patidar is caught on his backfoot. The only question is if the turn is too much, thus taking the ball down the leg stump. No it is not, confirms the ball tracker and Patidar will have to walk back.

Hartley comes around the wicket to Jaiswal who goes on his back foot to clip the ball away to deep mid wicket. FOUR! Patidar plays a delivery late and with soft hands to send it to the boundary. A single off the final delivery.

Bashir to Jaiswal. ALMOST! Jaiswal leaves a delivery on the fourth stump line, expecting the ball to turn away. It stays straight and misses the off stump by a whisker. Just one run from the over.

Now Hartley for the first time. FIFTY FOR JAISWAL! He drives to mid off and gets a quick single.

Bashir to Jaiswal. Three dot balls before the fourth is driven to long off for one run. Jaiswal on 49 now.

Anderson to Jaiswal. A touch of reverse swing on the second delivery and Jaiswal’s defence takes an inside edge. Jaiswal runs down the third delivery to third man for yet another single. FOUR! Patidar living dangerously. His punch takes a thick edge and runs wide of the gully fielder. Hundred up for India.

Bashir to Jaiswal, gets a long stride out and drives to long off for a single.

Anderson back into the attack. Jaiswal looks to drive the first delivery, gets an edge which runs down to deep third; one run taken. FOUR! Patidar makes the most of a delivery on his pads and puts it away through mid wicket. 

Bashir to continue. Just one run from the over, a single taken by Jaiswal through mid wicket.

Robinson for his ninth over. Jaiswal walks down the ground looking for a punch on the off side but misses. He gets an edge to backward point on the third ball; one run. Patidar gets off the mark with a FOUR! Just opens the bat face outside the off stump and runs the ball between backward point and gully.

Gill is given LBW off Bashir! Gill plants his front foot, is beaten and the ball hit his pads. Umpire didn’t take much time to give that out, but India has reviewed. Impact umpire’s call and Gill has to go! He falls for 38 off 65 balls.

Bashir varying his pace on good length. Gill doesn’t really time him well in this over. 

Robinson bowling in the 120s. Not much pace but there’s a bit of movement on offer for him. Gill square cuts the outside off delivery for four! Easy pickings. And another width outside off and Gill ends the over with similar cut shot for same result. 

Gill is playing Bashir very late. The off spinner has pulled his length slightly back this over. Six runs from the over. 

Ollie Robinson is back into the attack. Fuller delivery, Gill pushes the ball past mid-off to get another boundary! Jaiswal edges to keeper and England thinks the ball has carried to keeper. Replay shows the ball has touched the ground before the keeper collected it. 

Now Jaiswal joins the party! Charges Bashir and hits it straight over the bowler’s head for a SIX. 

Gill has played Anderson very well in this session. Has forced Anderson to change his lengths - now a lot fuller. Anderson drifts on the thigh pad and Gill flicks it towards square leg for four. Anderson getting the ball to reverse. Full ball and Gill hits the ball straight down the ground for another boundary. 

Bashir bowling to Gill with a short mid-on. Bowling straight, not much turn so far. Just a single on the last ball of the over. 

Indian batters keeping things steady, trying to dig deep. England keeping things tight. 

Anderson continues. Keeping the lengths back to both batters. Bowling is still doing a bit - more in the air than off the pitch. 

Jaiswal facing his first ball after lunch. Bashir continues. Jaiswal comes down the track and hit the ball straight down the ground. Good chase by Ben Stokes from mid-on and saves a certain boundary. Bashir keeping the outside edge in play, coming from over the wicket. 

Anderson from the other end. Begins with two short balls to Gill. Interesting. Anderson looking to keep Gill on the backfoot. Maiden. 

Shoaib Bashir to begin the proceedings. Gill defends the first ball back to bowler. Gill comes down the track and drives the ball past covers for four! Terrific shot. Single to end the over. 

Jaiswal is already inside the field shadow practicing with still five minutes to go. He’s in the zone. He along with Shubman Gill will be required to set up a strong platform for the rest of the batters here. England might bring spinners from both ends to start the session. Or, Robinson might continue his spell from one end.

Barring the poke that proved to be the end of Rohit Sharma, India has managed to score at a decent click. Yashasvi Jaiswal again was the batter to show his impressive range of shots. Shubman Gill and Jaiswal will look to continue in a similar fashion after the break too. 

Robinson to bowl his fifth, possibly the last of the session. FOUR! A sublime on drive from Jaiswal. FOUR more! Robinson strays on the pads and Jaiswal uses his wrists to clip it over the man in the catching position. Lets the final two deliveries through to the keeper.

A chnage in bowling. Shoaib Bashir to bowl his first over. Jaiswal with a punch to long off for a single. That’s the only run off the over.

Three runs from Robinson’s over. A single for Jaiswal and a double for Gill with a punch through mid on.

Gill taps Anderson’s first delivery through mid wicket with soft hands and gets to the non-striker’s end. The fifth delivery is angling into Jaiswal and he sends it to fine leg for a single.

Anderson to Jaiswal, FOUR! Full and in the slot and Jaiswal gets on the front foot to drive it down the long-off region. FOUR more, on the pads and Jaiswal glides it down to the fine leg boundary. Now Jaiswal picks down with flick through square leg.

Robinson to Jaiswal. Edged and FOUR! The ball pitches and shapes away. Jaiswal cannot get his drive out of the way. Luckily for him, the ball keeps low and sneaks between the second and third slips. A single off the final delivery of the over.

Anderson to Jaiswal, one run with a single through mid wicket. Rohit flicks the third delivery past the short leg fielder and picks two runs. GONE! Rohit nicks one outside off stump and Anderson has the first wicket.

Joe Root’s formidable effort takes England to the 350-run mark. It would definitely please Ben Stokes given England was 112 for five at the end of the first session. Ollie Robinson and Ben Foakes chipped in with vital runs. Now upto the Indian batters to take centre stage. It looks like a batting track but there’s enough to excite the spinners too.

Jadeja again. Root refuses to run a single till the fourth ball. He drives to long off and leaves two balls for Anderson. OUT! Anderson is given leg before. He goes up for a review. He looks to run the ball down the leg slip region but cannot connect. He’s caught plumb in front and the ball tracker shows three reds.

JADEJA STRIKES! Robinson tries to play a reverse sweep off the first delivery but gets a soft glove on it. Dhruv Jurel takes a brilliant low catch. Robinson takes a review but that cannot save him.

Jadeja concedes just one off his over. Kuldeep Yadav is into the attack now, replaces Siraj. He gets Root to edge one, Rohit takes it at first slip but the ball bounces just in front of him.

Siraj continues to attack the pads but he’s not getting the result he wants. Dot to start the over. Short this time and Root has all the time in the world to pull it for a FOUR! And with that, the 100-run partnership comes up as well! Five runs from Siraj’s over 

Jadeja continues from the other end after Siraj’s 4-run over. Wide outside off and he induces a bottom edge off Root’s bat but the ball falls safe. Just one from the over

Change of personnel. Jadeja replaces Siraj. Wide outside off to start thinfs off and Root gets a single. ROBINSON GETS TO HIS FIFTY IN STYLE! He gets down on one knee and lofts one through the square region for a FOUR! 

Short and wide from Akash and that’s slapped away by Robinson though extra cover and point for a FOUR! Back of the length this time, Robinson comes down the track, gives himself room and places it through the mid-off region for yet another FOUR! Make that three boundaries in the over! Through the leg side this time. An expensive over from Akash comes to an end

Siraj continues. Bowls one down the leg and that’s a dot. Siraj tries a bouncer but that’s pitched way too short and it beats both Robinson and the keeper and runs away for four byes. Robinson takes a single off the final delivery

Debutant Akash into the attack now. Starts off with an overpitched delivery to Root, who defends it with ease. That’s a maiden. Scratch that, it’s a no ball! And he completes the over with a dot

A lacklustre start from Mohamed Siraj here. The ball drifts down the pads and all Robinson had to do was to trickle it down towards fine leg. And India takes the new ball after just two deliveries from Siraj. Swing straightaway with the first ball as Siraj takes a tricky one away from Robinson and beats him. Four runs from the first over of the day

We are just under 10 minutes away from witnessing the start of day two. Joe Root is currently unbeaten at 106 and has stitched a crucial partnership with Ollie Robinson, which is now worth 57. India, on the other hand, opted against taking the new ball and it will be interesting to see if debutant Akash Deep can recreate the magic he performed on day one
