One more maiden over from Kuldeep Yadav. There was a delivery that kept low but Root was able to get bat to that awkward ball.

Ashwin back into the attack. Foakes drives to mid on for a single. A clip to deep mid wicket brings up Root’s fifty. 

Kuldeep to Root, there’s an edge as he tries to work the ball down leg. Jurel gets a glove to it but cannot hold onto it. The umpire gives it as leg bye but the Ultra Edge shows a spike. Four runs from the over.

Akash to Root, works it down to fine leg for a single. FOUR! Foakes latches on at this wide delivery and gets the ball through covers.

Kuldeep follows up with a maiden over. Ben Foakes is content with simply blocking the ball off his front foot.

Akash Deep again. Root gets FOUR more! He uses the late cut again and beats the slip cordon.

Kuldeep continues. Foakes comes down the track and hits the ball straight down the ground and finds a boundary. 

Change of ends for Akash. He replaces Jadeja. Pitch is looking much better to bat now. Akash has dropped his pace slightly. 

After a short burst by Akash, Kuldeep Yadav is introduced into the attack. Channel of attack: stumps. Coming over the wicket, England looking in no hurry. Just a single in that over. 

England happy to play out Jadeja here. He’s not giving away anything. 

Akash Deep keeping up with the line of attack: off stump. Mixing his lengths a bit now. Pitch has eased out a bit in this session. 

Jadeja now has dipped his speed into late 80s and early 90s in the last two overs. 

Akash Deep continues to attack the off stump. Idea is to keep bowling the length ball and hope for the lateral movement to its bit. A loose delivery after a while, wide outside off and Root square cuts it for four. 

Jadeja continues from the other end. He’s mixing speeds and his release points. 

Now Akash Deep is back into the attack. Foakes takes a double on the first ball. Bowling away from the stump, angling into the right handers. Keeping the inside edge into play more than outside. 

Both Jadeja and Ashwin are going through their overs very quickly here. Root and Foakes have been very patient post Lunch. 

Ashwin has been bowling slightly quicker. Wonder what the strategy is there. 

Ashwin drifting too much on the pads. Foakes has no problem to hit on the leg side and find singles. Two singles from the over. 

Jadeja has been consistent. Hasn’t offered much to batters. Root happy to push forward and defend. 

England has been milking runs off Ashwin so far this session. Ashwin’s deliveries ending on the middle and leg stump has given England batters a bit of time to play. 

Jadeja bowling quicker through the air - all in the 90s. Maybe expecting the bounce on the pitch to do a bit of help. 

Ashwin. Root and Foakes finding singles every over. Looks like they have decided to give running a priority than boundaries.

R Ashwin from the other end. He has kept coming around the wicket to right handers, keeping LBW in play. Two singles and a double in that over. 

Jadeja continues with his over that ended with Ben Stokes’ wicket on the first ball. Ball has been turning. Two runs from the over. 

India has sent half the England side into the hut. It was Akash Deep who lapped up the top order with some serious seam bowling before the dependable spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja got the next two wickets.

Jadeja for his ninth over. GONE! Stokes has to walk back. A bit unlucky as the ball stays low. He misses his flick and gets caught plumb in front.

IND vs ENG, 4th Test: Ashwin becomes first Indian bowler to pick 100 wickets against England

Ravichandran Ashwin became the first Indian bowler to pick 100 wickets against England during India’s fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday.

Ashwin to Bairstow, FOUR! Too short from Ashwin and Bairstow rocks back to put it through point. Bairstow misses a sweep and India goes up for a review. GONE! The pitch of the delivery was the only question and the ball tracker shows its in line. Ashwin has his man.

Ben Stokes in the middle now. Gets off the mark with simple tap through covers.

Jadeja to Bairstow. Sharp turn for Jadeja which beats the batter’s outside edge. Bairstow pushes to long off for a single. Now Root is beaten! Just outside off and as Root pushes to his front foot to defend, the ball shoots wide after pitching. FOUR! Placed to perfection by Root through the point region.

Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack now. SIX! Bairstow slog sweeps to collect the first maximum of the innings. 11 runs from the over. England gets to 100 too.

Jadeja for his sixth over. FOUR! A late cut from Root to pocket a boundary through third man. Six runs from the over.

Siraj continues. Sloppy work from Rohit at mid off. He misses a straight forward drive and allows two runs to Bairstow. FOUR! Bairstow slaps a length delivery right back over the bowler’s head. FOUR to end the over. Too full from Siraj and Bairstow laps it up with a cover drive through covers.

A maiden over from Jadeja. The first delivery of the over pitches on off-stump line and turns sharply and misses the off stump.

Siraj replaces Akash. FOUR! Root waits for this back-of-a-length delivery and places it late to pick a boundary.

Jadeja to Bairstow. Gets his drive through covers off the middle and picks two. Bairstow attempts a sweep off the final ball which is angling down leg but only gets it off his pad. Three runs in the over.

Akash Deep for his seventh over. Bairstow pulls the second delivery behind square for two runs. He opens the bat face on the fifth delivery to guide the ball to third man for a single.

Jadeja again. Root drives and picks a single off the first delivery. The ball keeps low as Bairstow misses his cut, but he’s able to get off the mark on the next delivery with a square drive. Root glances the final delivery for the third single of the over.

Akash Deep continues. Length ball and Crawley smacks it away towards midwicket for four. It’s a no ball as well. GONEE! Crawley’s off stump has been breached yet again! Similar delivery, seamed back into him, through the gate. Terrific opening spell by the debutant. 

Jonny Bairstow at the crease now. 

Jadeja continues. Tight over. Three runs from the over. 

Akash Deep continues from the other end. OUT! Duckett is gone and Akash finally gets his maiden Test wicket. Kept challenging the outside edge and finally one takes the edge straight to the keeper. 

Ollie Pope in at number three. And India has reviewed a LBW against him on the second ball. Three reds and gone! Akash Deep strikes twice in the over. It was a surprising review given Pope had walked down a bit when the ball hit him. 

Joe Root at four. A loud appeal on the first ball, umpire isn’t interested again but India takes a review after a long discussion. Impact outside and India lose a review. This has been a terrific over by the debutant. 

Ravindra Jadeja into the attack early in the innings. Typical Jadeja: wicket to wicket attack. Duckett goes for a sweep and a very loud appeal but umpire isn’t interested. India discuss and take a review. Impact and wickets umpire’s call which means Duckett survives. Drives through the covers for four to end the over. 

Duckett hasn’t faced a lot of deliveries so far. He’s still sedate. Akash Deep continues to challenge his outside edge. Two runs from the over. 

Most of the bowls have seamed into the right hander. Driving length, Crawley shows the face of the bat and hits the ball down the ground for four. On the pads and flicks it towards the leg side for another boundary. He is finding his rhythm now. And another one! Same delivery and this time hit towards square leg. SIX! Wow. Hit over long on. That was on a length, not a half-volley! 19 runs from the over. 

Impressive speed. Crawley is looking to find ways to score boundaries, getting lured by a deliveries well outside off. Seamed away from Crawley, gets a thick outside edge goes past the slip cordon for four. 

An appeal for LBW on the first ball against Crawley. On the next ball, hits the ball straight down the ground for four! Length ball by Siraj, and likely the first ball he timed perfectly this morning. 

Uneven bounce. Akash Deep has started pretty well here. Taking the ball into the right hander and away from the left. GONE!! But wait, it’s a no ball. Crawley’s off stump went cartwheeling. Tough for Akash. A terrific ball, came into the right hander, right through his defence. 

Two singles on the first three balls to start the Siraj over. Looks like a pitch where it won’t be easy to time the ball early in the innings. Three runs from the over. Tricky pitch. 

Akash Deep, the debutant, from the other end. Right arm fast starts off around the wicket to left hander Ben Duckett. Starts off with targeting the stumps on the first two ball on length. Down the leg and a terrific take from Dhruv Jurel, diving to his right. First runs on the board with a single. Challenges the outside edge on the off stump. 

Mohammed Siraj to open the bowling for India. Starts off with a down the leg delivery. Gets his line and length right on the next ball. Ball swings away from right hander Zak Crawley from the driving length. Surprises Crawley on the third ball with a short ball that jumps off the surface and hits the gloves. Early signs of the pitch playing tricks w.r.t bounce. A maiden to start.

It looks like a dry river bed with a lot of cracks, the ball could turn from certain areas and it could happen very early in the match. There will be slow and low turn, some shots could be tough, but this is not a rank turner.

England wins the toss and opts to bat.

Ben Stokes: We will bat first. The first one hour will give us an idea about how the pitch will play, but it was always going to be a bat-first track. I’m happy with the way we’ve operated through the series and looking forward to more of the same.

Rohit Sharma: We would have batted first. Looks a bit dry and has cracks. The last two games were good for us and we’ll have to play the same way. Proud of a lot of young guys in the squad, they’ve taken responsibility and have taken the challenge head-on. One change with Akash Deep making his debut.

India captain Rohit Sharma is on his way to the centre. Despite the cracks on the pitch, the winner of the coin flip should still opt to bat first.

Our correspondent Pranay Rajiv pings that Akash Deep is being handed the cap in the team huddle. The 313th cap for the Indian men’s cricket team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been a thorn for England in the first three Tests. Just seven Test matches old, Jaiswal has taken the English bowlers on at will and with aplomb. The 21-year-old is just 139 runs away from completing 1000 runs in Test cricket. If he gets those in the first innings, he will be the joint-fastest Indian alongside Vinod Kambli.

James Anderson sits just four wickets away from becoming the first pacer to clinch 700 Test wickets. Though the early signs hint at a spin-friendly surface, count out Anderson from getting to the feat at your own peril.

The pacer averages 13.65 over the three Tests so far, picking 17 wickets in six innings. He was Rohit Sharma’s go-to option when looking for a wicket. Will resting Jasprit Bumrah cost India in Ranchi? More so, who will take his place in the XI - Mukesh Kumar or Axar Patel?
