iverpool have made a formal request to postpone the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final with Arsenal after a further Covid outbreak at the club.
First-team training was cancelled on Tuesday because of a rise in cases among players and staff.
The request is being considered by the EFL, but should the game at Emirates Stadium go ahead then Arsenal will be looking to take the positives from their gut-wrenching defeat to Manchester City.
The Gunners produced one of their best displays of recent seasons against City, but were hit by Rodri’s late winner after being reduced to ten men.
Liverpool, meanwhile, were involved in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Sunday, a result which leaves them 11 points adrift of City in the title race.
As a result, this competition could well be taking a higher ranking than usual in terms of Jurgen Klopp’s priorities.
Arsenal vs Liverpool is scheduled for a 7:45pm GMT kick-off on Thursday, January 6, 2022.
The match will be played at the Emirates Stadium in London.
TV channel: The match will be televised on Sky Sports Football and Main Event.
Live stream: Sky Sports subscribers will be able to watch the match online via the website or Sky Go app.
Both sides have had their squads depleted by the AFCON. Liverpool have lost Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita, while Arsenal are without Nicolas Pepe, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.
Covid is also taking its toll, with Roberto Firmino, Alisson and Joel Matip missing the Chelsea game for Liverpool and Eddie Nketiah, who has excelled for Arsenal in this competition, also testing positive.
In addition, both sides’ managers, Klopp and Mikel Arteta, missed their weekend Premier League fixtures after testing positive.
With the FA Cup Third Round coming between the two legs, both managers could rotate less than in previous rounds.
Arsenal are not quite suffering as badly as Liverpool in terms of the importance of the players they’ve lost to AFCON and Covid and that could prove decisive.
Arsenal to win 1-0.
Arsenal wins: 81
Liverpool wins: 92
