Everton could hire Dan Ashworth

Goodison News speaking to Bryan King

Bryan King doesn’t think the Friedkin Group should go anywhere near Dan Ashworth once they complete their Everton takeover.

The ex-Goodison scout isn’t a fan of the 53-year-old, who recently left his role as Manchester United sporting director after just five months [via BBC Sport, 8 December], which would no doubt have left Kevin Thelwell sweating.

Alex Crook recently said live on talkSPORT [12 November] that Dan Friedkin could look to replace Thelwell with Ashworth, with the Toffees set to officially be taken over by the Friedkin Group after the deal was approved by the Premier League [via Sky Sports News on X, 13 December].

However, King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – doesn’t think Ashworth should be appointed by the Friedkins.

“I don’t think it would be a good idea for Everton to appoint Ashworth,” King said.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

“Not at all. I don’t like what he has done or where he has been, he hasn’t exactly set the places he has worked at alight.

“He went to Newcastle United, can somebody remind me what they won during his tenure? And the most ridiculous thing is that Manchester United singled him out and paid to bring him to the club.

“He spent five months at the club and then he leaves? I’m afraid these positions, what these people seem to control and dictate, are not for me, and he is certainly not for me. Therefore, Everton should 100 per cent stay away from him.”

Dan Friedkin keen to appoint Dan Ashworth at Everton?

Thelwell is out of contract at the end of the season and hasn’t exactly been a huge success at Goodison Park. Therefore, with new owners coming in, the Everton sporting director will no doubt be looking over his shoulder.

However, whether or not Ashworth should be the man to replace Thelwell is certainly up for debate. While he has done some good work in the past, his reputation would have no doubt taken a hit after the Manchester United saga.

As a result, Friedkin might now think twice about making a move.

However, whatever the American decides to do, it seems as though he will at least definitely be headed to Merseyside, although one final approval is needed before the takeover is official [via Ben Jacobs, 13 December].

In other Everton news, the club have been urged to sell one “unhappy” player within weeks.
