Dan Ashworth will have a £480million budget to work with once his move to Man United has been finalised.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Ashworth will still have to be ‘smart’ in the transfer window due to United’s huge debt.
Newcastle United announced on Monday (19 February) that sporting director Ashworth has commenced a period of gardening leave after quitting the club.
The 52-year-old has been made a top target by Sir Jim Ratcliffe following his takeover at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils reportedly have to pay a £20million compensation fee if they want to hire Ashworth immediately.
As revealed by Football Insider, new financial regulations discussed by the Premier League last week would provide Ashworth with a jaw-dropping budget at Man United.
Man United will provide £480m war chest to Dan Ashworth
Maguire explained that United’s £600million revenue will give Ashworth a huge budget, but most will be spent on the club’s wage bill and transfer debt.
“I think a lot depends on whether or not Manchester United qualify for the Champions League,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“We could be left in the ironic situation of Manchester United wanting Manchester City to win the Champions League this season to boost the chances of an extra qualification spot.
“So I think there are a number of unknowns as far as Manchester United are concerned.
“They will continue to generate revenue of around £600million next year and the maximum amount you can spend on player wages, agents fees and net transfer cost is 80 percent of revenue then decreasing to 70.“
“So, and I’ve looked at the paperwork, that gives United and Ashworth a figure of £480million.

“However, Manchester United had a wage bill of £340million and they have a considerable transfer debt too.
“So, there will have to be some smart trading, the club has not spent the money well in recent years and that is what Ashworth is being brought in to do.“
