Chelsea beat West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League on Monday night as Enzo Maresca’s side returned to the Champions League places.
The hosts started the brighter of the two sides as Noni Madueke and Enzo Fernandez spurned chances, with West Ham more than happy to sit back and wait to pounce on Chelsea mistakes.
And they did exactly that as Levi Colwill’s pass back towards goal went straight into the path of an unmarked Jarrod Bowen, who was clean through and arrowed a low finish past Filip Jorgensen.
The second half started with chances for both sides, but it was Enzo Maresca’s changes that paid off as Pedro Neto rifled in after pinball in the box.
From there, Chelsea were in the ascendancy, peppering the West Ham area before Cole Palmer’s cross took a cruel deflection off Aaron Wan-Bissaka, taking it into the back of the West Ham net to move the Blues back into the Premier League’s top four.

Why Enzo Maresca so enjoyed Chelsea's ugly win over ’unlucky’ West Ham
23:08 , Chris Wilson
Chelsea have shelled 10 points from winning positions since Christmas, a problem so acute that the players sat down and shared some hard truths at the training ground this week. “When we go behind or concede, we need to stick together and be more of a team,” Cole Palmer said before kick-off here, and Chelsea did just that, conceding a farcical opener before hitting back with two goals in 10 second-half minutes to sink West Ham. Perhaps chasing is easier than being chased.
Chelsea’s goals were scrappy, with substitute Pedro Neto pouncing on a rebound in the 64th minute, before Aaron Wan-Bissaka diverted Cole Palmer’s cross into his own net. But after only one win in their last seven league games, this was a night for substance, not style. Graham Potter’s renewed West Ham were well drilled and perhaps deserved something from his return to Stamford Bridge. Instead, three points propelled Chelsea back above Bournemouth, Newcastle and Manchester City into fourth.

Maresca speaks
22:41 , Chris Wilson
In his own interview, Chelsea boss Maresca says that it was a tough game, “especially mentally”.
“When West Ham come here and sit back with 10 players behind the ball, it's not easy, so you have to be mentally strong and you need to be patient.
"We had more than 10 shots in the first half. We had clear chances in the first half but unfortunately, we missed the target. With some changes the game completely changed. Overall we completely deserved to win the game."
On the errors leading to goals, he adds: "I'm not concerned, it's the way we play. Sometimes defensive mistakes happen, keeper mistake, number nine misses the goal, that's football.
“It happens. The important thing is to continue.
"It was a good weekend for us in terms of results and we knew today was even better."
Potter: "We gave everything"
22:34
In his post-match interview, Graham Potter says that his team “gave everything”.
"The spirit of the team was fantastic. It was relatively even in terms of chances but we come away with nothing in terms of the result but there was lots to be positive about.
"You look at the second half. They had to make some substitutions, the first goal was a bit of a turning point and we felt it was a foul, you need those things to go your way.
“We were doing well but we couldn't quite hang on and we had a real big chance at the end to take a point.
"The second one is a deflection. We have to focus on what we did well and the spirit and performance, our supporters appreciated the performance of the team.
“The shape of the team was really good. You need a bit of luck, we felt unfortunate with the lead-up to the first goal but it wasn't to be.
"The understanding of what we want to do is there so we have to build on that,” he adds.
Bowen: "We left everything out there"
22:27 , Chris Wilson
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen says that the team are "just disappointed to be leading and lose the game”.
“We left everything out there, we came to a side who are pushing for top four, pushing for the title. At the end, we could have nicked a point with Mo.
“I feel like it was a West Ham performance where we showed a lot of energy. On another day, I think it could have been a different result.
"This is my first game with the new manager but since I have been watching, the crowd are back on their feet and it has been great to see.
“To be back tonight I was really happy and pleased to score a goal but disappointed with the result."
Cucurella: "Today the team showed character"
22:20 , Chris Wilson
When he speaks, Cucurella adds that the win "was very important in front of our fans”.
“Today the team showed character, I think we were confident and we deserved the three points.
"We play in this big club, we need to win trophies, we need to believe in ourselves. We need to suffer, we came back from the mistake in the first half and we showed what the players had to come back in this game.
"We played today like a team, like a family and I think it is very important for us."
FT: Chelsea 2-1 West Ham
22:15 , Chris Wilson
Pedro Neto and Marc Cucurella are first to speak to Sky, with the former saying: “This victory coming from behind was really important for us. We have to be consistent, this is the most important thing."
"We are a big club. When you win you are the best and when you lose you are the worst so it is about working and being consistent and showing what we can do.
"To win trophies, you have to know how to suffer. We are here to suffer and do our best and to finish in the top places."

It wasn’t a classic first half at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea have shown enough to be ahead - but coupled with a moment of lacking concentration from Colwill, it means they’re behind.

“I was right behind that pass by Levi Colwill and he might as well have sent a text to Jarrod Bowen ahead of time.

Potter: "I had some good times and special nights there"
19:45 , Chris Wilson
In his own press conference, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter said that he “had some good times and special nights” with the Blues.
“I wish them well as a club, I'm thankful to them because it was part of my journey. But I'm here now - I'm delighted with that. I'm looking forward to seeing some friends and playing the game."
On facing the Blues, he added: “They are a tactically well-prepared team, Enzo has done a great job with that, and they've done a great job as a club in terms of stabilising and rejuvenating the squad.
“It's a tough game - they're competing to be in the Champions League. We have to play to the strengths we have and we go there with optimism, encouragement and enthusiasm."
Head-to-head
19:40 , Chris Wilson
These two sides have faced off a total of 109 times in the past, with Chelsea winning 47, West Ham winning 40 and 22 ending as draws.
Earlier this season, Chelsea beat a hapless West Ham side 3-0 at the London Stadium, with the Blues winning 5-0 in May of last season too.
The last time the Hammers beat Chelsea was in August 2023, when they ran out 3-1 winners at home.
Maresca: "We need a response"
19:35 , Chris Wilson
In his pre-match press conference, Enzo Maresca told the media that his side need a response to last week’s result against Man City.
“We need a good performance to try to win the game, but not because it's after the City game - it's because we try to always do the same. It would be a good moment to get three points, especially at home.
“In all the games, we've had chances to score. We've struggled with results but the performances have been there. In some games, the performance has not been there for 95-100 minutes, which you need.
“The big difference in the past games has been inside the box. We've conceded goals we can avoid and not scored goals that in different moments we will score."
On tonight’s opponents, he added: “I have watched the games with Graham in charge and you can see they try to be very aggressive. It will be a tough game, like always."
Match facts

Chelsea have won 31 Premier League matches against West Ham, second only to their 36 victories against Tottenham.
However, Enzo Maresca's side have one win in their last seven matches.

Graham Potter is aiming to become the first ex-Chelsea manager to return to Stamford Bridge and win a Premier League fixture. The previous eight managers failed to do so in a combined 22 attempts (D8, L14).
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca looking forward to the end of January transfer window
19:25 , Chris Wilson
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is looking forward to the “relief” of arriving for work on Tuesday knowing the transfer window has closed.
A run of one win in seven Premier League matches has coincided with a period of speculation linking a number of his squad with moves, something Maresca had previously said has affected the players’ focus as they have dropped out of the top four.
Midfielder Cesare Casadei left the club on Sunday to join Serie A side Torino for a reported £12.5million, while 21-year-old defender Renato Veiga, who had broken into Portugal’s senior team for the first time since moving to Stamford Bridge in the summer, has been loaned to Juventus.

Chelsea still to do business tonight?
19:15 , Chris Wilson
There are still rumours persisting around some Chelsea players as we approach the close of the January window at 11pm.
Joao Felix and Ben Chilwell are the main names linked with a move, with the former having agreed to join AC Milan and the latter supposedly on the verge of joining Crystal Palace on loan.
It is thought that any potential offer for Christopher Nkunku likely to be rebuffed at this stage of the window.
Match facts

Chelsea have won the past two Premier League meetings by an aggregate score of 8-0 and are aiming to win three top-flight matches in a row against West Ham for the first time since 2011.

Team news

Line-ups should be released in around five minutes, so here’s a reminder of the early team news.
In his pre-match conference, Enzo Maresca said that the squad will be the same as that which was available to him for the loss against City.
That means that Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile remain sidelined, while Wesley Fofana is a longer-term absentee.
Perhaps the biggest question mark is over who will start in goal after Robert Sanchez’s mistakes last week, with the rest of the 11 likely to be similar.
For West Ham, Graham Potter has stated that he is hopeful of having Jarrod Bowen return in time to face Chelsea, while he is also optimistic that Lucas Paqueta could return after suffering a groin problem against Villa.
Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Füllkrug remain sidelined, as does defender Jean-Clair Todibo. However, Konstantinos Mavropanos is back after serving a suspension.

Enzo Maresca could change Chelsea goalkeeper plans after Robert Sanchez errors
18:20 , Chris Wilson
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca said goalkeeper Robert Sanchez cannot “make a mistake every game” and expect to keep his place as he hinted he could turn to understudy Filip Jorgensen for Monday’s game against West Ham.
The former Brighton keeper has made five mistakes leading directly to goals this season, most recently in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City last weekend when he was caught badly out of position allowing Erling Haaland to give City the lead.
Chelsea fans also cheered ironically whenever the 27-year-old caught the ball during the second half of their victory over Wolves at Stamford Bridge after he had earlier gifted the visitors an equalising goal by dropping the ball at a corner.

Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Füllkrug remain sidelined, as does defender Jean-Clair Todibo. However, Konstantinos Mavropanos is back after serving a suspension.

Chelsea face West Ham at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League this evening, with the hosts looking to keep up their push for Champions League football after a good weekend of results for the Blues.
Enzo Maresca’s side could move back into the Champions League places after City’s 5-1 loss to Arsenal, and they will only be four points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest with a win tonight.
It would be quite the turnaround from their recent results, with the 3-1 loss to Manchester City last week giving the Blues their third loss in six games.
And tonight they face a West Ham side who are languishing in 14th ahead of kick-off, with the Hammers having lost one, drawn one and won one of their three matches so far under Graham Potter.
