Algerian man in Kuching fined RM1,200 for causing hurt

KUCHING (Feb 21): An Algerian man was fined RM1,200 in default one month in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today for causing hurt to a 38-year-old man.
Yassine Mostefaoui, 35, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali after a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code was read to him.
The Section provides a jail term for up to one year, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
He committed the offence at Kuching International Airport (KIA) at 1.14pm on June 25, 2023.
Based on the facts of the case, the victim was queuing up to board a flight from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur when Yassine slapped his left cheek and snatched his phone.
Besides that, Yassine also scolded the victim and kicked the victim’s abdomen when snatching his phone.
Yassine assaulted him after assuming the victim was taking a photo him.
Following the incident, the victim lodged a police report. Investigation found Yassine had slapped the victim’s face, pushed his neck and kicked his abdomen, causing the victim to suffer soft tissue injuries.
The case was prosecuted by ASP Arman Ibrahim while Yassine was unrepresented by a counsel.
