SubscribeJames Bond star Ben Whishaw, who is best known for playing Bond’s technology aid ‘Q’, has given his take on the suggestion that his character may have been gay.
James Bond Star Ben Whishaw Admits That His Character Potentially Being Gay Made Him Feel ‘Unsatisfying’This was first hinted at in the last installment of Daniel Craig’s Bond movie, ‘No To Time To Die’, during which Ben’s character had mentioned that he had a date with another man. And given that this had come out of the blue, there was a feeling that this may have been a last minute decision.
After all, nobody saw it coming nor did it fit in with the storyline of the film especially in light of the other countless Bond movies that Ben had been in which could have easily mentioned such a storyline earlier.
In an interview with ‘The Guardian,’ Ben admitted that the decision did play on his mind. He said: “I think it came from a good place. And I think I remember feeling something like what you’ve just described.
“I think I thought, ‘Are we doing this, and then doing nothing with it?’ I remember, perhaps, feeling that was unsatisfying.”
And yet, it is important to bear in mind that Ben is a gay actor. That may have been one of the reasons why the studio decided to include that in the story and not see that as anything controversial.
However, Ben revealed that he wished he could have gone into the rationale behind such a move. But he chose to stay quiet by preferring to focus on the project instead.
He added: “For whatever reason, I didn’t pick it apart with anybody on the film. Maybe on another kind of project I would have done? But it’s a very big machine. I thought a lot about whether I should question it.”
Now that we know the studio decided to go ahead with it, this avoided any controversy that could otherwise have emerged if a straight actor had said those lines. But for Ben, that did not come into his thinking.
Ben Crenshaw’s following comments confirmed as much: “I don’t think it needs to be that way. Have a discussion. There can be disagreement.”
