Qualcomm Accused Of Lying About Snapdragon X Series Chips Benchmarks

The Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series chipset was officially announced late last month, much to the anticipation of folks looking forward to the ARM-based processors. However, at the time of launch, the tech opinion site SemiAccurate claimed that the mobile chipmaker had cheated on the benchmarks with its X Elite and X Plus laptops.

SemiAccurate’s accusations were primarily based on the benchmarks Qualcomm first showed off during its Snapdragon Summit conference, held in Hawaii in October last year. The site says that, through its sources, the numbers displayed were slower than expected. Not only that, but those benchmarks were reportedly done within a black box – nobody was allowed to see the settings used for testing, and the charts showing the performance of the Snapdragon X Elite and Plus against competitors Apple and Intel, could not be verified.

It should be noted that, even at the time, SemiAccurate did not how Qualcomm was cheating on its benchmarks. It argues that if “tier 1” OEMs are reportedly unable to even come close to recreating the benchmark numbers of the Snapdragon X Series platforms on their own, then the onus, the site says, is on the chipmaker. On another note and to be fair, SemiAccurate is known for being voracious and for aggressively calling key industry players for certain claims made, but never delivered in the past.

Qualcomm has released a statement, obviously and outrightly denying SemiAccurate’s claims of cheating on benchmarks. “We stand behind our performance claims and are excited for consumers to get their hands on Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus devices soon.”
