Title hopefuls Arsenal beat Ipswich Town to climb up to second in the Premier League table and reduce the gap to leaders Liverpool to six points.

The Gunners came into the game unbeaten in their last 41 Premier League home games against promoted sides (W36 D5), including wins in each of the last 12. They extended those runs to 42 home games undefeated and 13 wins in a row with a victory over Kieran McKenna’s side that was more comfortable than the narrow scoreline might suggest.

Kai Havertz turned Leandro Trossard’s cross into the net to put the hosts ahead in a first half in which Arsenal had 84.3% possession and Ipswich failed to have a single shot.

Arsenal worked hard after the break to add to their lead, but the fact that they weren’t able to meant that there were more than a few nerves among the home supporters. The players, however, never really looked troubled.

The visitors offered little attacking threat, managing just three shots all night, all from outside the box and none of which hit the target.

Defeat leaves Ipswich stuck in the relegation zone, three points adrift of safety, having won only two of their 18 games since promotion.
