Marcelo has announced his retirement from football with tributes flocking in for the legendary Brazilian. The 36-year-old has decided to hang up his boot after leaving Fluminense in November after a glittering career. Marcelo retires as one of the greatest left-backs in history and he will be remembered with great affection mainly for his 15-year spell at Real Madrid.
Marcelo’s unbelievable technical ability dazzled supporters around the world and his flamboyant personality earned his place in many hearts. The Brazilian played 721 games across his career, scoring 58 goals and registering 117 assists - an incredible return for a left-back. Marcelo also won 28 trophies including five Champions Leagues and six LaLiga titles with Madrid, plus the Confederations Cup with Brazil in 2012.

In an emotional video announcing his retirement, Marcelo said: “At 18, Real Madrid came knocking & I arrived. I can proudly say I’m a true ‘Madrileño’. 16 seasons, 25 titles, 5 UCLs, one of the captains & many magical nights at Bernabéu. Real Madrid is a unique club. Madridismo is an indescribable feeling.”
And Real Madrid club president, Florentino Perez lavished praise on the Brazilian, stating: “Marcelo is one of the greatest left-backs in the history of Real Madrid and world football, and we have had the privilege of enjoying him for a long time. He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and will always be his home.”
