Jurel and Ashwin are back to resume proceedings after lunch. The surface still looks for batting and the duo will hope to take India past the 450-run mark at least. Wood with the ball for the first over after the break. Just short-of-a-length on fourth stump and Ashwin defends off the backfoot. Short, angling down leg-side and tucked behind by Ashwin. Shortish delivery by Wood and Ashwin defends it back to the bowler. Short and going down leg again, and Ashwin shoulders arms. Four fielders on the leg-side inside the circle, including a leg-slip. FOUR! Half-volley and pushed past a vacant mid-on region for a boundary by Ashwin. 

Once again, England started the day on top. Root clinched the prize scalp of centurion Ravindra Jadeja with an easy return catch. But debutant Dhruv Jurel and R. Ashwin ensured that India didn’t fold easily. The duo saw out the early movement from Anderson and played the English spinners with ease. Hartley bowled an accurate, miserly spell from the other end. A talking point of the session though was the five penalty runs India incurred courtesy of Ashwin running on the protected area of the pitch. 

Hartley with what should be the last over of the session. Stokes has dragged his field short, tempting Jurel with a chance to go over the top. Short and wide from Hartley and Jurel slashes it to the cover fence for a four. That is the end of the morning session. 

Ashwin’s turn to face Wood’s short ball barrage. He ducks under a few, before Foakes fumbles one, helping Ashwin and Jurel to nick a bye. Now Wood goes over the wicket to Jurel. He is steadfast in his defence. 

Hartley pitches it up and Jurel taps it down the ground to add an easy single. That brings up the 50-run partnership. Ashwin adds another single with a push through covers. 

Wood continues on with his short-ball tactic against Jurel. Wood brings the ball slightly outside the off stump and Jurel guides it to deep point to gather a double. Length ball and Jurel drives it to the vacant mid off region to add three more runs to his tally.

Another over for Hartley. He has well and truly locked Jurel and Ashwin in from one end. Now he goes full and Ashwin turns it off the pitch for a single towards deep mid wicket. Jurel finishes the over with another single. 

Wood goes around the wicket with a short leg, square leg and a deep square leg in place. The ploy is evident as daylight. Test the youngster with some short stuff. Now Ben Stokes puts himself at the leg gully. Tricky time for Jurel. On the hips from Wood and Jurel manages to put it past Stokes for a four. 

Hartley up against Jurel. Not many scoring opportunities available for the Indian batters against Hartley. Jurel squeezes in a single with a nudge to the leg side. Good running there from Ashwin and Jurel. Hartley drags Ashwin forward with one that dipped. Skids past the outside edge. 

Another quiet over from Hartley. He has been putting in quite a shift in the morning session. Just a single, from Ashwin, in this over. Stokes turns to Wood now for a breakthrough. 

Jurel takes a single with a punch to the leg side off the first ball. Ashwin steers one to deep point to add another single. Full now from Wood and Jurel drives it wide of mid off and gets another single in. 

Hartley fires in another maiden over. This time it is Ashwin who plays out the run-less over.

Full and just outside the off stump from Rehan Ahmed. Ashwin drives it on the up through covers for a classy four. Ashwin pushes one to the cover region and sets off, but is promptly sent back. The umpire though spotted Ashwin had ran through the middle of the pitch and is soon punished with five penalty runs. 

Jurel’s turn to bring out his defensive skills against Hartley. The left-arm spinner continues to attack the stumps, forcing the debutant batter to play at everything. Hartley pitches one outside the leg stump and spins it viciously. Jurel had to check his shot to avoid an inside edge. Another maiden over. 

Rehan Ahmed into the attack. He starts off with a middle stump line. Ashwin deals it with by defending on the front foot. Rehan goes a tad short and Ashwin tucks it away for a single to the square leg region. Just that single from the over. 

Hartley goes wide and Jurel tries for a cut shot. Drops slightly short of the fielder at point. Hartley pushes the length forward. Jurel doesn’t shift to the front foot and is beaten by the away spinner. Maiden over from the left-arm spinner. 

Anderson misses his line. On the pads and put away for a four by Ashwin towards the square leg fence. Better line from Anderson for the rest of the over. Ashwin defends his way through it. 

Hartley with his first over the day. Length ball outside off and Jurel drives it off the back foot to deep cover to get a single in. Ashwin tries to go past the fielder at mid wicket, but fails in his efforts. Just a single from the over. 

Rising delivery from Anderson. Ashwin can’t middle it. But the edge falls just short of second slip. Close shave for the Indian batter there. Nothing full from Anderson for the over. Ashwin forced to be on defensive as he plays out a maiden over. 

Short and wide from and Jurel diverts it to deep backward point to take an easy single. Wood with a wide length ball and Ashwin square drives it to add another single. Short from Wood. But it isn’t directed at the batter. Jurel saw it all the way through to his bat. Flicked away for a six over the slip cordon. Some shot that one. Wood responds like a typical fast bowler. Another bouncer, this time at the batter. Jurel ducks under it. 

Anderson now up against Ashwin. He starts with a fifth/sixth stump line. Ashwin leaves those comfortably. Anderson now brings it to the off stump and Ashwin knocks it with soft hands to covers and sneaks in a single. Jurel persists with his defence. Slightly full from Anderson and Jurel pushed it off the front foot in front of point and gets a single in. His first run in Test cricket. 

Mark Wood gets his turn now. Ashwin on strike. Back of a length to start with and Ashwin crunches it through covers. FOUR!! Wood responds with a rousing bouncer. Ashwin sways away from it. Ashwin keeps things moving with a single to the square leg region. 

Two new batters out in the middle now - Dhruv Jurel and R Ashwin. Anderson now operating from over the wicket. Jurel leaves a few and then defends a few from the comfort of his crease. Assured batting from the debutant. 

Root around the wicket. Whizzes one past his outside the edge. Then brings one in with an arm ball. Jadeja leaves that one.. Full now from Root and Jadeja is tempted. He tries to lob it over the bowler. But it ends up being an easy return catch for Root. Big, big blow for India.

Anderson continues on against Jadeja. Drives one to mid on and sets off. Kuldeep is adamant in his no, unlike Sarfaraz, and Jadeja is forced to scamper back to his crease. Jadeja though eventually takes a single with dab to the off side. 

Anderson goes around the wicket. Nips it away just a tiny bit. Kisses Kuldeep’s outside edge and it is an easy catch for Foakes.

Root continues. Bairstow in as a close second slip. Kuldeep is in no mind to give away his mistake. Root keeps firing it outside the off stick and Kuldeep leaves it with ease. Maiden over. 

Anderson straight up. Jadeja to face his first delivery of the day. Anderson comes over the wicket. Good length and on the stumps. Jadeja defends. Outside the leg stump now. Clips off Jadeja’s pads and Foakes gathers it with a dive to his right. Again on the leg side. This time Jadeja puts it away for a single. Kuldeep adds another with a click to the leg side. 

Root with the first over of the day. Kuldeep on strike. Defends the first three, before edging one past first slip to get a couple of runs. Just those two runs from the over.
