KOTA KINABALU: Sarawak’s launching of its own airline company AirBorneo is a move that would benefit consumers, particularly those in Sabah and Sarawak.

The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia chairman for Sabah, David Chan said that for years, festive season airfare hikes have placed a heavy financial burden on students, families, and those wishing to return home for major celebrations like Gawai and Kaamatan.

The introduction of AirBorneo is a game-changer, providing much-needed relief and ensuring that air travel remains affordable, accessible, and fair for all, he said.

In commending the Sarawak government for its proactive and decisive action in launching AirBorneo, he said Sarawak’s “said and done” attitude demonstrates strong leadership, commitment, and an understanding of the needs of the people.

“This initiative not only enhances connectivity within Borneo but also closes the gap in transportation affordability, ensuring that no one is left behind during the most meaningful times of the year,” Chan said.

“We extend our deepest appreciation to the Sarawak government, its Cabinet, and the dedicated team behind this initiative,” he said, adding this is a great victory for consumers and a step forward in addressing longstanding airfare issues in East Malaysia.

The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia looks forward to seeing the successful implementation of AirBorneo and urges all relevant stakeholders to support and sustain this effort for the long-term benefit of the people, he said.

On Wednesday (Feb 12), Sarawak formalised its takeover of MASwings Sdn Bhd from Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), with the airline to be renamed AirBorneo as the state's own carrier with the transfer of ownership expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The Sarawak government signed a sale and purchase agreement with MAG for the transfer of ownership on that day.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said at the signing ceremony in Kuching that AirBorneo would operate as a full-service carrier, creating a balance between connectivity, affordable fares and economic benefits.

He said the new airline will continue to focus on rural air services (RAS) while progressing to destinations within a four- to five-hour radius, before expanding further in future.

It will also engage in strategic partnerships and code-sharing agreements with other airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, he said.
