Sarawak has officially unveiled its own airline, AirBorneo, following the acquisition of MASwings. The state’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, announced the establishment after the signing of the Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) between the local government and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG).

Abang Johari stated that AirBorneo will operate as a full-service carrier (FSC) with a focus on enhancing passenger experience through superior in-flight services. The airline aims to boost Sarawak’s connectivity both domestically and internationally, with initial operations centred on Rural Air Services (RAS) and regional destinations within a four-to-five-hour radius. Future expansion will be market-dependent.

“When we named the airline AirBorneo, we also took into consideration our sister state Sabah, and we will be extending to Kalimantan as well,” the Sarawak Premier said. “Being a full-service carrier, AirBorneo will engage in strategic partnerships and code-sharing agreements with other international airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, further expanding network reach and improving global connectivity for Sarawak.”

Abang Johari emphasised that AirBorneo will create job opportunities across various sectors, from customer service to advanced technical roles, contributing to Sarawak’s economic growth. He noted that control over air services is a crucial step in transforming Sarawak into an aviation hub for Borneo and a gateway to ASEAN.

Plans for new international routes and fleet modernisation are expected to improve service quality and increase tourist arrivals. The anticipated growth in tourism is projected to generate additional revenue and employment, supporting economic diversification across sectors such as aviation, tourism, and services.

The Sarawak Premier reiterated that AirBorneo remains committed to RAS, ensuring continued connectivity for underserved communities in Sarawak and Sabah. The state government will collaborate closely with MAG to ensure a smooth transition while leveraging its expertise to maintain high service standards. Training programmes will also be developed to equip aviation professionals with up-to-date skills, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to industry excellence.
