Jan Siewert has been relieved of his duties as Mainz coach.
Siewert was dismissed on Monday following Sunday's 3-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart.
"We would like to thank Jan for his commitment," said sporting director Christian Heidel.
"He took on the job at a difficult time with a lot of passion and meticulousness, and his work gave the team a great boost. Unfortunately, this was not reflected in a fundamental turnaround or results. Instead, the situation in the relegation battle has become much more acute for us in recent weeks. Unfortunately, we now see the change in the coaching position as a necessary step to achieve a positive turnaround."
Jan Siewert, who worked as a youth coach at the club before he took over from Bo Svensson in November, said:
"I would like to thank Mainz 05 for almost four years, this is a very special club for me. Many colleagues have become friends here. Together with my coaching team, I did everything I could to keep the club in the Bundesliga, but unfortunately we also lacked the necessary luck. I wish the team and the club all the best - and especially that they can stay in the league.
The new Mainz coach will be unveiled on Tuesday afternoon, the club revealed on Monday.
